Journal Chira's Journal: My Birthday: Final Episode 8

28 December, 2003

Well, Dan and I went to mom's house but she wasn't there. We met Bow and my brother first. I gave Bow her presents. She is a cute kid. She thanked me then walked to Dan and thanked him, too. After that I gave the book to my brother. He is a quiet person, so he just smiled and thanked us. Then Bow ran to me and gave me a big box. She surprised everyone including her father. She told me that she chose this New Year's present by herself and asked me to unwrap the box. Wow! She gave us a tea set which is a tea pot and four little cups. They are all in a shape of a bunch of concord grapes, really cute.

Then my mom came back. I hugged her and gave the present to her. She smiled at Dan and me. We spent time talking about family, mom's health and her business, Dan's job and health, my studying and job...etc. It was a good time for everyone.

Two hours later, I told mom that Dan and I had to go to Silom (downtown) for another errand, so we had to leave. She asked us to wait then she went upstairs and brought 'Sai-sin' down. Sai-sin is a white thread that has white magic from prayer. Normally, Thais get Sai-sin from monks and keep it with the Buddha image at home. By the way, Sai-sin has got the white magic from monks and faithful persons. Thais also believe that Sai-sin will protect Buddhists from evil and bad spirit.
Mom tied Sai-sin to my wrist. It looks like a bracelet. Then she did the same thing to Dan. Dan kissed her cheek. I hugged her and kissed her cheek, too. I told her that I would visit her again soon. Then we left.

It was a short time for me, but it was great. Dan told me that he was really happy that everyone in my family likes him. He loves everyone, too, even though sometimes it was a bit strange for him. I told him that he felt strange because we came from different cultures, but everything was about love and relationship. Now, he is in Thailand and this is his family.

Dan has to be feeling pretty good about that. Sounds like your Mom likes him a great deal. :)
    • You are more right than you know. She doesn't let anyone hug or kiss her. She just doesn't seem to know how to decline to me.
Goy and I have been talking about TechnoLust and his 9 year younger girlfriend, obviously because Goy and I are 11 years apart. I think we are also lucky that Thailand sees younger women with older men as rather normal (Goy's father was 20 years farther along than her mother when they married). That said, there's no way that I could handle an immature teenager, even if I was TL's
      • My mom just doesn't know how to show her love, seriously.
She was born in a difficult time of her family. She started earning money when she was 7. By this I mean she earned money for a whole family: my grandmom, 3 younger sisters and 2 younger brothers. This is really amazing for me. She is a strong woman from her mind. She had to be the family's leader, so, she had to be tough like a man. She kept all the feelings inside until she forgot how to express them.

I didn't understand her when I was a kid. Bu
  • I wish you all the best. I don't really remember my 25th - I hope all the bad things went away though. My 33rd is coming up soon. Just to let you know, being 30-something is something to look forward to. I've never felt better or more confident in my entire life than now...

I wanna be in Thailand now...waaaaaah!

    • Thank you very much :)

Have you ever been here? It's a beautiful country.
      • I was in Thailand a little over a year ago. I spent...hmmm...5 days in Chiang Mai (mostly excursions out during the day) and the rest of the time in Bangkok.

It's a special place. It's not just the beauty; a lot of places are beautiful. There's just this something - maybe the people, maybe the food, maybe the strong presence of Buddha, I don't know. I'm not sure if I should try to find out either. A little life mystery is good for the soul :-)

        Happy new year!
