If the world were to invest in renewable energy resources, we wouldn't be dependent on the middle east supply of fossil fuel. If we were independent of the need for their energy, we could stonewall the region by isolationism and wait it out. Once the world is no longer dependent on their energy, or their supply runs dry, that whole region will once again become moot. It will be like Africa, which has nothing to offer the "civilized" world. At such time, a million human beings can or will perish in that region and the West wont even so much as lose a nights sleep.
The development of renewable energy resources is the key to the long term security of our collective. It is also paired with the ecological security of our world environment. However, Big Oil is so deeply embedded into the economies and governments of the West. We will never be free of it until the last gallon of oil is pumped from the ground, we might as well get used to the plastic glove treatment at the airport, and the NSA snooping our email and tapping our phones... 1984 anyone?
