I take a similar view as you to the this "me"view of self. I have several implanted medical devices (bard port, hempatic pump), but necassary for medicaly treatment. And though they get in the way (I can't sleep on my belly anymore), I still think of both of them as part of me and part of my set of capabilities. For example the other day whilst putting on my backpack I bumped my hempatic pump (sits under the skin, just below my ribcage on my left) and didn't think "stoopid pump that thing's awalys in the way", but instead blurtted out "Ouch my pump!", despite being well aware it is my skin over the pump that was hurting. So not to come accross like oooh look at me I'm a cyborg wannna be i know what i'm talking about, but I agree with the parent. We're just a group of parts to make a system, and i'd welcome just about anything that'll improve my quality of life.
