Comment We're better than clickbait (Score 2) 55

I usually don't comment when a slashdot article is bad - there's more than a couple - but this one is really, really bad. The effect they're talking about is cherry picked and nigh unmeasurable, the text of it refutes the headline as unlikely given a lack of evidence, and the study methodology is ridiculous. This is just clickbait about a contentious issue, reporting on somebody who published a useless study. It doesn't matter if you're pro or anti the unspoken contentious issue, this just isn't meaningful data about it at all.

I know it's /. and it's 2024 but we can be so much better than this!

Comment Acting rationally (Score 4, Insightful) 170

If he stays, they take his money. If he goes, they don't. Seems like a rational and ethical choice and one most people would make. The commentary in the post talks about how great the programs that these taxes fund are as if he's bad for not paying them out of the kindness of his heart. Don't cry for Washington state - they drove away part of their tax base!

Comment Disinformation is another word for lying (Score 1) 208

Is it more effective to take down rings of liars, or would it be more cost effective to open the aperture of discussion so a similarly sized army is arguing the liars to death? It should be a natural strength of liberal democracies to discuss with liars to the point where they're not an issue.

I'm not a fan of communist dictatorships and I think the best way to combat them is to let them talk themselves into a corner as they lose favor through debate!

Comment I've been using Firefox on Wayland for a long time (Score 2) 72

It works fine, this change is to make it so you don't have to set MOZ_ENABLE_WAYLAND=1 to ask it to launch as a Wayland native app instead of using Xwayland. For the majority of Wayland users, native Wayland Firefox works better than running it via Xwayland so this is an improvement.

There should be no change for people who are running X11. The sensationalism in the comments is misguided! This has nothing to do with if Wayland is better or worse than X.

Comment They said the same thing about Walmart (Score 3, Insightful) 148

But since they existed in a capitalist system, Amazon came and ate their lunch. There's no reason to expect that the system has changed due to Amazon or other mega-markets either. Does the author understand that traditional retailers take a % fee for shelf space and distribution as well?
