I find this discussion slightly strange. Here people keep saying that they have lived through many generations and yet no one has taken the time to define what a generation is. It would seem that if you wish to hold the discussion that it would be a vital piece. After all that /is/ what is being debated. Computers evolve but do not necessarily end as far as generations.
A generation usually refers to a group of individuals at approximately the same age or holding the same values. They generally change about every decade or so real time. Computers however evolve at a more constant rate. We think more on computers and as such we don't generally think about how they are affecting our lives. We are now in a generation of hackers and crackers and programers.
Software becomes outdated because instead of continuing the development of one program the software industry now pushes out more products that it completely develops. Case and point Microsoft Windors 98. The industry now pushges a computer program out at a rate then creates updates so that it runs more efficiently.
To say that many generations have passed is not quite adequate. The Pentium class computers are truly or mixed generations. The Pentium and Pentium II being with in a time span and increasing the speed. The Pentium III however might be said to be of a different generation because it would seem to be a different computer.
It is also not right to assume that the present generation does not know who Yoda is. Star Wars transcends many generations in its appeal. ;-) Especially after the rerelease of the original trilogy and the upcoming trilogy that is to be released during this generation.
However, when exploring this particuliar subject one has to keep in mind that the human mind is in a constant state of development and so is everything they are making. So it would be appropriate if the computer systems also developed at the same rate.
Thank you for listening.
