"Second, that was an act of protest against taxation..." Actually, no. It was an act of protest against taxation *without* representation. And now your next statement: "people who really did identify as "left" were behind, namely prohibition and eugenics (they literally called themselves "progressives", by the way)"...it doesn't matter what they called themselves. What matters is what they stood for. The "progressives" of the time of which you speak do not equate to what "progressivism" stands for today...just like old-school Republicans are *nothing* like the Republicans of today (and many other examples). You place far too much value in a word and take things too literally.

Agreed. I'm in my forties and while nostalgia is a strong force for anyone above a certain age...I think there's a benefit to older technology. An automatic transmission is nice, but there are more things to break. A "smartTV" may be more integrated/convenient, but it's less likely to be updated and there are more things to break. A gee-whizzy washing machine might be nice...but we still have to manually load the fucking thing. So, as you said, why the fuck does it need Internet access? After all, we can't click a button and have it collect stuff from the hamper.

Sadly, this is one of those things that butts-up heavily against convenience. If only one or two places do this, it *might* be easy enough to go elsewhere. But, eventually, enough places will be doing this to the point where there is no practicable choice. On top of that...most people don't bother reading/understanding large print, let alone the fine print.
