Comment Doesn't this help the scammers? (Score 1) 180

Great, so the bill is passed and Uncle Sam tells his people that they are safe from fraud. *Gasp* a new site pops up. But it's not on the blocked list. The people rejoice, they can once again help out the Nigerian Prince, and this time it's not a scam... ZOMG!!!!1 More people then ever get burned because they no longer have to apply common sense to the web, the govt is there to help them. I wouldn't be surprised if the site uses it's stats as not being on the list as a proof of legitimacy. By the time the site has been blocked, the scammers have made far more money then they would have in the same timeframe off the old site, and it's time to setup the next scam. Actually, now that I think about it, does anybody know if a Nigerian prince is somehow a lobbyist backing this bill, or at the very least, padding the pockets of the politicians?

Bah, it's just a filler law. If they find a phone of a predator, it's something else that the predator can be charged with. It also gives the cops a reason to take your cell phone if your filming them... "I didn't hear your phone make the required noise, your going to have to give me that phone or I'll arrest you".

Updates exist to protect you from new virus threats. As the machines aren't networked, getting those new viruses would be very tricky as well. The real question is why wasn't joe spaceman's usb key scanned (assuming he brought it) as well as all other computer equipment before the shuttle took off?

Researchers Sour on Vista Service Pack 1 Performance 339

Stony Stevenson passed us a link indicating that a group of researchers has described Microsoft's upcoming Windows Vista Service Pack 1 as basically a performance dud. Researchers from the Devil Mountain Software group is claiming that a series of in-house benchmark tests showed that users hoping to receive a speed boost from the update will be disappointed. "Devil Mountain ran its DMS Clarity Studio framework on a laptop Barth described as a "barn burner" -- dual-core processor, dedicated graphics, and either 1GB or 2GB of memory -- to compare performance of the SP1 release candidate that Microsoft released last week with the RTM version that hit general distribution last January. The Vista RTM was not updated with any of the bug fixes, patches or performance packs that Microsoft has pushed through Windows Update since the operating system's debut. 'One gigabyte, 2GB [of memory], it didn't make a difference,' said [CTO Craig] Barth. 'SP1 was never more than 1% or 2% faster.'"

stm2 writes: "As a long time /. reader, I saw how Star Wars was considered first as the "best SCIFI story ever" to the "Lucas stole my childhood" rant. This article in the Techreuplic blog goes into the subject and states that the Midi-chlorians are the culprit. It was the Midi-chlorians, Jar Jar Binks, the actors?. When did Star Wars jump the shark?. A bonus question: Did George Lucas redeem himself in Episode III (RotS)?"
