The Odyssey and the Iliad was told by troubadours long before Homer put it on paper ..er papurus. The final form as it survived was Homer's but the story, and a lot of the elements in it predated him, so these were truly epics ...
That was a little offtopic so I should state my opinion that what Lukas is doing.
This in effect is trying to turn something that is a masterpiece as a moment in time, into a timeless story .... quite possibly to be redone 20 years in the future in true 3d or whatever ... so that the main idea isn't lost. I personally dont believe that the story is that good ...

As for the merchandising ... its common in all modern films, why not in the films of the man that revolutionized it? The man has to make money, its the american way. I don't mind it half as much as his audacity to try to make his own hallmark into a gift to humanity
