Comment Iâ(TM)ll miss it (Score 1) 41

I have a lot of nostalgia for the product and will miss it. Working with Xamarin before there was a Xamarin.Forms, it and its predecessor Xamarin Studio made it possible to support a few different operating systems in the embedded system and mobile space with one code base.

Were it not for it, a *nix geek like me never would have become as comfortable with the Microsoft ecosystem as Iâ(TM)ve become (even with a decade spent working on Windows CE). Only Microsoft knows how many developers this is going to impact today, but even now many of our younger new hires chose developing in VS for Mac, warts and all, because they felt more at home on a Mac. Hopefully VS Code will really evolve into something useful for MAUI, or I think a lot of mindshare will be lost going forward.

As it stands, I think itâ(TM)s time for me to take another look at Jetbrains Rider. Praise from its fans notwithstanding, it never seemed worth the hassle before, but maybe now is the time to compare it to VS Code.

Japanese Build Pocket Robot-Cellphone Hybrid 81

An anonymous reader writes "Japanese researchers unveiled yesterday a pocket-size telepresence robot called Elfoid. The device, which looks like a little ghost, transmits voice and motion over a 3G network to convey a person's 'presence' to a remote location. It's a creation of Hiroshi Ishiguro, a professor at Osaka University who is known for his lifelike teleoperated androids. The Elfoid has a limited range of motion, but its creators are planning to equip it with mini-actuators so it can imitate the movements of the person on the other end of the line. With vaguely formed features, the device is designed to be a surrogate of people of any age or gender."
