MUDs: dikus, mushes, moos, etc. I started out with Merc, a modified Diku based MUD by Kah, Hatchet, and Furey and was completely hooked. If I'm not mistaken, Diku was based on some other type of MUD and so on, and was originally based on D&D in some form or another. DikuMUD was a very popular MUD which spawned Merc, Circle, Copper, Viel, Silly, Pirate, Sequent, TheIsles, Envy, Rom, and others.
