Comment Legit paper advantages (Score 1) 835

I love all my electronic gadgets as much as the next /.er, but there are very practical advantages to paper. It is very high resolution, light weight, very easy to mark up in a comfortable and intuitive way, is always on--no crash, dead batteries, boot up time--is very ergonomic (you can move around and read it, read in direct sunlight, you can fold it and unfold it, etc.) and its very easy to move stuff from your computer to paper.

The Judge's order simply means he has stated a claim--i.e. alleged facts sufficient to meet all the elements of negligence or gross negligence (duty, breach, causation, damages). The order does not weigh the merits of those allegations really and definitely doesn't consider the damages amount he is asking for--that will be up to a judge or jury after all facts are presented, etc. Chances of this cases going anywhere still seem very slim. And you could sue Bacardi or any other vendor if you could allege they were breaching a duty to you that caused you damages--say they falsely labelled one of their products as containing less alcohol that it did or they laced it with something to make it more addictive, etc. This lawsuit may or may not be ridiculous--certainly on its face 3 million for game addiction seems ridiculous--but that will be determined in due time once the process has taken its course, it wasn't the purpose of this stage of the proceeding to assess the merits of the claims, just whether they were legally sufficient.

BlindType — the Amazing Keyboard of the Future 125

kkleiner writes "BlindType has created a new touchscreen keyboard program of the same name that changes size, orientation, and position to match your wandering fingers as they type. BlindType also features some of the most impressive typing correction software I've ever seen. The result is a practical touchscreen interface that knows what you meant to type, even if you make mistakes. Lots of them. In fact, you can type without looking at the screen at all."

Man Wants to Donate His Heart Before He Dies 456

Gary Phebus wants to donate his heart, lungs, and liver. The problem is he wants to donate them before he dies. Gary was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, better known as Lou Gehrig's disease, in 2008. Phebus says he'd like to be able to donate his organs before they deteriorate, and doesn't consider his request suicide because he's "dead anyway."

Plastic Bottle Catamaran Crosses The Pacific Ocean 56

The Plastiki, a catamaran made with plastic bottles, has completed a 8,000 mile trip between San Francisco and Sydney. Captain David de Rothschild said, "The Plastiki is literally a metaphorical message in a bottle about beating waste and reducing our human fingerprints on our natural environment." The boat will go on display at the Australian National Maritime Museum for the next month.

Why You Never Ask the Designers For a Favor 238

Usually there is nothing funny about a missing pet, but the tale of Missy the lost cat is hilarious. It serves as an example of just how clueless your fellow employees can be, and why you should never ask the designers to drop what they're doing, and help with a personal matter.

Sound As the New Illegal Narcotic? 561

ehrichweiss writes "The Oklahoma Bureau of Narcotics is warning parents and teachers of a new threat to our children: sounds. Apparently kids are now discovering binaural beats and using them to get 'physiological effects.' The report goes on with everyone suggesting that such aural experiences will act as a gateway to drug usage and even has one student claiming there are 'demons' involved. Anyone who has used one of those light/sound machines knows all about the effects that these sounds will give and to state that they will lead kids to do drugs is nonsense at best. It seems the trend in scaring the citizens with a made-up problem has gone to the next level."

Comment its not the percentage change that matters (Score 1) 1042

the example is a bit deceptive, its tempting to conclude the first is better because it is a greater percentage change, but going from 10 to 20 is still better than going from 33 to 99 in terms of gallons saved per mile. Traveling 100 miles in a 10mpg, would take 10 gal; 5 gal in a 20mpg; 3 in a 33 and 1 in a 99 mpg car. So you save more gallons per distance in first case even though second is a bigger percentage improvement. right?

Doctors Seeing a Rise In "Google-itis" 368

It's one of the fastest-growing health issues that doctors now face: "Google-itis." Everyone from concerned mothers to businessmen on their lunch break are typing in symptoms and coming up with rare diseases or just plain wrong information. Many doctors are bringing computers into examination rooms now so they can search along with patients to alleviate their fears. "I'm not looking for a relationship where the patient accepts my word as the gospel truth," says Dr. James Valek. "I just feel the Internet brings so much misinformation to the (exam) room that we have to fight through all that before we can get to the problem at hand."

Apple Orders 10 Million Tablets? 221

Arvisp writes "According to a blog post by former Google China president Kai-Fu Lee, Apple plans to produce nearly 10 million tablets in the still-unannounced product's first year. If Lee's blog post is to be believed, Apple plans to sell nearly twice as many tablets as it did iPhones in the product's first year."

NYT's "Games To Avoid" an Ironic, Perfect Gamer Wish List 189

MojoKid writes "From October to December, the advertising departments of a thousand companies exhort children to beg, cajole, and guilt-trip their parents for all manner of inappropriate digital entertainment. As supposedly informed gatekeepers, we sadly earthbound Santas are reduced to scouring the back pages of gaming review sites and magazines, trying to evaluate whether the tot at home is ready for Big Bird's Egg Hunt or Bayonetta. Luckily, The New York Times is here to help. In a recent article provokingly titled 'Ten Games to Cross off Your Child's Gift List,' the NYT names its list of big bads — the video games so foul, so gruesome, so perverse that we'd recommend you buy them immediately — for yourself. Alternatively, if you need gift ideas for the surly, pale teenager in your home whose body contains more plastic then your average d20, this is the newspaper clipping to stuff in your pocket. In other words, if you need a list like this to understand what games to not stuff little Johnny's stocking with this holiday season, you've got larger issues you should concern yourself with. We'd suggest picking up an auto-shotty and taking a few rounds against the horde — it's a wonderful stress relief and you're probably going to need it."

Comment Re:Nobody gets "e-books". (Score 2, Interesting) 503

Absolutely. Paper is always going to be more papery than stuff that's not paper. The real advantage to ebook readers (and I love my kindle) is the ability to so quickly and easily browse so much different content. I can sit down, decide what I feel like reading about and then start reading a book on that topic. If something sparks another interest, I can do a search for books on that topic, download free samples, and read those--that to me is the real advantage of the ebook reader. Plus there is a lot of free content available as well. Also, its really nice to have an entire library with you at all times. Finally, the annotations web page kindle has set up is great--it stores all your highlights online from a single web page. I know some people are belly aching about their ability to cut off stuff, kill switches etc. but I mean really--give me a break. There have been a few instances of those, if you are worried about it fine, then stick to the paper, but for me the advantages far outweigh the slight chance I am going to have Big Brother pull the kill switch on me.
