Comment Composition of Plume Variable (Score 1) 284

Let's get objective for a moment. The stuff that comes out of a volcano is immensely variable in composition -- many of the thousands of rock types on our plant started as lava -- some rather benign and others highly toxic and corrosive -- and with differing melting temperatures and pH. Some volcanic plumes are loaded with droplets of sulfuric acid and other nasties -- this particular volcano apparently has significant fluorine -- one of the nastiest elements that exist. There have been plane crashes involving aircraft that frequent places like Hawaii, caused, they say, by corrosion from the salty particles in the air from sea spray. One size can't fit all when it comes to potential harm to an aircraft from a cloud from an eruption. And as in the Hawaii example, it can be a cumulative condition over time as well as the widely-publicized catastrophic failures during flight. I'm all for prudence when air safety is concerned. Perhaps those who depend upon "just-in-time" everything need a model with room for delays, and alternative supply lines.

Just two days ago my company received an inquiry from what might have been a potential new client -- but they used a gmail e-mail address.
At my company, we assume that legit businesses have company e-mail addresses like joe@mycompany.com -- anything else say potential spam or worse...
My Auntie Mable on the other hand uses one of the "public" e-mail providers, and that's just fine.

Back in 1970, at Resolute Bay in the Canadian high arctic, I had a discussion with two scientists about global warming -- back then, the Arctic Ocean had increased in temperature by 2.7 degrees over the previous 40 years!!! One identified mechanism was soot from the atmosphere, a byproduct of combustion and to a lesser extent, volcanic ash. The amount of energy it takes to raise the temperature of an entire ocean by this amount is staggering...

This soot reduces the albedo of the snow and ice, resulting in less incident energy being reflected back into space and the unreflected energy raising the local temperature.

For anyone who cares to look, "global warming" is a function of very many causes creating a frightening synergy, greenhouse gasses though probably being the main culprit.

The fact that Google Print finds text that has been plagiarized from my own copyright published material is a good thing, I believe.
Similarly, the free publicity provided by Google Print (and all the other Google activities) is wonderful. It brings me new readership who would, I'm sure, have never found my musings in a normal library.
Is the authors guild perhaps afraid that some of their members might be found out for publication of non-original work?
