Comment Stop reporting biased hit pieces as news (Score 1) 657

You guys are better than this. This isn't news, this is a hit piece.
Anybody who chooses to run flash on an Android phone knows that some sites works, some don't. When they don't work, the world doesn't end and the phone doesn't explode, you just go on with your life. No shock, no awe, it just doesn't load and you go do something else.
There, is that really so "shockingly bad"?

Comment No alternative [equally handicapped] platform! (Score 1) 716

"There is no alternative platform, despite what others may say about Android, it's immature and their app store(s) are a wild west nightmare."

This application is filling a gap in iPhone OS's capabilities. iPhone OS doesn't do widgets or anything widget like - until Apple does it first, of course - which is a feature people want. These guys are trying to fill that hole, and in free and open markets, thats a good thing. However iPhone is not a free nor open market.

The only reason Android doesn't work for him is because Android doesn't have this particular glaring functionality hole.

Comment Epic Non-News Item of the Year! (Score 2, Insightful) 484

Really guys? This is a post about an announcement stating who will do the announcement of something we all already know about. Just because it's Apple related doesn't mean it's news. If it weren't from Apple, this wouldn't make headlines anywhere on the planet. Surely theres something else to talk about today??

Comment The TERRORISTS WIN when you report this stuff! (Score 2, Insightful) 192

Please, pretty please - this isn't news. Stop letting Apple's very silly iPhone platform content controls manufacture "news" just to keep them in the headlines. This is a slashdot post about an app that, presumably, you're anticipating somebody will find offensive? Their policy is silly, we all agree, but every time you make a big hubub about the existence or banishment of a somewhat controversial app, THEY WIN because they get the free publicity. And, like it or not, when it comes to Apple, even bad PR is good PR because it reminds people how "important" and "popular" the iPhone is, which adds to it's critical mass and perceived popularity (which is why people have iPhones in the first place). The insanity has gone from newsposts about their app store, to apps that are banned, and now to apps that aren't banned but are possibly offensive? Por favor, stop rewarding their idiotic policy with free headlines!

For f's sake, go read the wikipedia article at the very minimum: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_the_F-14_Tomcat#Iranian_Service Beyond that, it would help to be somewhat knowledgeable about subjects before making flamboyant and silly claims, such as the insane notion that the F-14 "saw more action in Top Gun than they ever saw in real life." Even if taken as hyperbole, that statement still has no factual basis whatsoever - even if you threw out all of the combat time in service of the Iranian Air Force. It makes sense to consider where the F-22 would be used during it's lifetime - indeed thats a major argument for not buying anymore - but painting the F-14's storied history as one of uselessness and inaction is going down a wrong, totally false path.

Comment I expect bad titles from CNN, not /.... (Score 1) 829

As has been mentioned numerous times, "the F-22" was not canceled. What actually happened id that "plans to acquire MORE F-22s in the short term have been canceled." The 187 Raptors in the US Air Force are deployed and will be around for a while. Come on guys - I know it doesn't involve Linux, but that doesn't mean you can just jump on the drive-by-media train and not bother to be precise.

Comment Really, Slashdot? (Score 1) 289

Please, there has to be somewhere in the world that doesn't start fondling itself whenever Apple leaks garbage to the press to remind everybody how much people go crazy over any news related to their products. An entire post over the RUMOR of a POSSIBILITY that the new iPhone will have an autofocusing camera, video capability, and a compass? Is that really exciting? Actually, doesn't the G1 do all those things already?
