Comment Re:Polls on the Front page are stupid (Score 2) 150

Polls accumulate data over a period of days, whereas articles on the FP are generally collect comments over a period of hours - then are done.

Without the reminder always there on the sidebar I'll never remember to do this.

Stories come and go on a daily basis. Polls last for weeks at a time. It seems prudent to separate them on the page.

Why not Both? When the poll changes, post it on the front page while keeping the traditional side bar position.

In the beginning was the Plan and the Specification.

And the Plan was without form and the specification it was void.
And darkness was on the face of the implementation team.
And they spake unto their Leader, saying,
"It is a crock of shit and it stinks"

And it was the Leader and it was the Project Head.
Now the Leader spake unto the Project Head, saying,
"It is a crock of feces and intolerably malodorous."

And it was the Project Head and it was the Department Manager.
Now the Project Head spake unto the Department Manager, saying,
"It is a container of excrement and its effluvium is very strong."

And it was the Department Manager and it was the Product Manager.
Now the Department Manager spake unto the Product Manager, saying,
"It is a vessel of fertilizer of overpowering strength."

And it was the Product Manager and it was the Centre Manager.
Now the Product Manager spake unto the Centre Manager, saying,
"It containeth that which aideth the growth of plants and strong it is."

And it was the Centre Manager and it was the Director.
Now the Centre Manager spake unto the Director, saying,
"It promoteth growth and it is very powerful."

And it was the Director and it was the President.
Now the Director spake unto the Vice-President, saying,
"This powerful new product will promote the growth of the Company."

And the President looked on the product and saw that it was good.

Small Nuclear Power Plants To Dot the Arctic Circle 255

Vincent West writes with news of a Russian project currently underway to populate the Arctic Circle with 70-megawatt, floating nuclear power plants. Russia has been planning these nuclear plants for quite some time, with construction beginning on the prototype in 2007. It's due to be finished next year, and an agreement was reached in February to build four more. According to the Guardian: "The 70-megawatt plants, each of which would consist of two reactors on board giant steel platforms, would provide power to Gazprom, the oil firm which is also Russia's biggest company. It would allow Gazprom to power drills needed to exploit some of the remotest oil and gas fields in the world in the Barents and Kara seas. The self-propelled vessels would store their own waste and fuel and would need to be serviced only once every 12 to 14 years."

Submission + - Sun Slips Firefox Extension Into Java Update (paulcardno.com)

pcardno writes: "It seems it's not just Microsoft that have spotted a good opportunity to distribute their software through Firefox Addons. On installing the latest annoying, sysbar bubble based Java update, my Firefox informed me that I had a wonderful new Java addon automatically. Here's the addon screenshot. Yes, I could opt out of it, but why are Sun installing Addons to my Firefox without me making specific choices in the application itself? To be clear — I have never chosen to install this Addon, yet it has been installed without my permission with the latest Java Update."

Wiretapping Program Ruled Legal 575

BuhDuh writes "The New York Times is carrying a story concerning that well known bastion of legal authority, the 'Foreign Intelligence Surveillance' court, which has ruled that the National Security Agency's warrantless eavesdropping program was perfectly legal. It says, 'A federal intelligence court, in a rare public opinion, is expected to issue a major ruling validating the power of the president and Congress to wiretap international phone calls and intercept e-mail messages without a court order, even when Americans' private communications may be involved, according to a person with knowledge of the opinion.'"

Dubbed Mega-D, the botnet currently accounts for 32 percent of all spam, 11 percent more than the Storm botnet which peaked at 21 percent in September 2007. The botnet started about 4 months ago but has been steadily increasing since then. It is also using news headlines to trick victims into opening the spam, a technique synonymous with the Storm worm.
