Thankfully SpaceX is bigger than Elon, and Gwynne Shotwell's control provides focus and stability to smooth the edges of Elon's behaviour and split attention. Not trying to downplay the role Elon has played in getting SpaceX to where it is, but he put Shotwell in place for a reason, and she has done a bang up job being the cornerstone of the company.

What the summary doesn't make clear is that this has nothing to do with building PRODUCTION starships. It is about rapidly iterating on the test models, so that they can learn faster. There would be no need to build production starships at this rate (not any time soon at least), but they are using new construction methods and have a huge amount to figure out. Working under pressure is also a benefit during the learning phase, because if they can perfect it under these conditions (tight turn around, building in the field), they will do even better in production.

So in Australia, credit ratings are pretty locked down as well (and applied to far fewer circumstances than in the US)... but nearly every major employer (including government agencies) now requires applicants to go through a background check (inc. police check) that requires you to submit copies of your driver's license, passport, and numerous other highly personal items. Would you like to guess who runs that largest provider of background checks in Australia... as hint, it starts with "equi" and ends with "fax".

I agree. Granted, I live in Australia, so things might be different, but I have been on Nextdoor for several months now, and in what is a very active neighbourhood, I have only seen crime related posts once, during what was a legit crime spree (kids roaming through neighbourhood smashing stuff). Mostly it is people trying to get rid of old furniture, or looking for local tradies to help them out. Can't say I get a huge amount of value from Nextdoor, but I definitely would not call it a "fear based social network."
