I'm a Systems Engineer (SAN & ESX) at a large Australian hosting company. I started out as a Level 1 phone tech at an ISP, switched after a year to the hosting company as a Level 2 and after about 2 years went for my current role.
You can get a Sysadmin job without a Uni degree but:
- You'll have to work your way up vs going straight in after Uni
- It's probably easier at the same company provided you keep a good rep for hard work without drama
- You learn outside of the role eg. setup a home ESX cluster from old comps, this doesn't have to be training with a piece of paper (though it helps) but just to show you really know your subject matter
