The Proton Just Got Smaller 289

inflame writes "A new paper published in Nature has said that the proton may be smaller than we previously thought. The article states 'The difference is so infinitesimal that it might defy belief that anyone, even physicists, would care. But the new measurements could mean that there is a gap in existing theories of quantum mechanics. "It's a very serious discrepancy," says Ingo Sick, a physicist at the University of Basel in Switzerland, who has tried to reconcile the finding with four decades of previous measurements. "There is really something seriously wrong someplace."' Would this indicate new physics if proven?"

Searching DNA For Relatives Raises Concerns 199

An anonymous reader calls our attention to California's familial searching policy, which looks for genetic ties between culprits and kin. The technique has come to the fore in the last few years, after a Colorado prosecutor pushed the FBI to relax its rules on cross-state searches. "Los Angeles Police Department investigators want to search the state's DNA database again — not for exact matches but for any profiles similar enough to belong to a parent or sibling. The hope is that one of those family members might lead detectives to the killer. This strategy, pioneered in Britain, is poised to become an important crime-fighting tool in the United States. The Los Angeles case will mark the first major use of California's newly approved familial searching policy, the most far-reaching in the nation."

Patient "Roused From Coma" By a Magnetic Therapy 123

missb writes "Could the gentle currents from a fluctuating magnetic field be used to reverse the effects of traumatic brain injury? New Scientist reports on a patient in the US who was in a coma-like state, but can now speak very simple words after being given transcranial magnetic stimulation. This is the first time TMS has been used as a therapy to try and rouse a patient out of a coma."

Journal Journal: The Evil Empire has its hand in everything....

So I finally got around to looking for the MechAssault game for xbox which will allow the Linux installer to run on my soldered xbox. When I was out shopping a few weeks ago, the targeted store was close to a GameStop, so I ran in to GameStop looking for a copy of MechAssault.

Journal Journal: Xbox Linux

I have a first-generation xBox. Not those new-fangled xBox-360s. I used to play games, I used to have my brother's 6-year-old son come over to kick the crap out of the rest of us at Halo. I used it as a DVD player and as a CD player.

I got its motherboard soldered and made an xbox keyboard, mouse, and USB extension.

Now I need to find the time to install Linux on it.

Stay tuned.
