Btw. i was thinking about placing the reactor core in the ground below sea level and then use a self circulating cooling system based on sea water. But that's not good either, because in the case of a meltdown or flood (like a tsunami ;) ) it would be increasingly difficult to monitor it and an increased risk of radioactive material leaking into the groundwater.

It's probably a hydrogen explosion. The same thing happened in the Three Mile Island accident, although it was a smaller explosion that time. Hydrogen is apparently produced when the fuel rods are not completely covered with cooling water (don't know the physics / chemistry behind this, sorry). The Fukushima reactors are light water moderated BWR's. This means that the neutron moderation will disappear as soon as the cooling water vaporises (in contrast to Chernobyl which was graphite moderated), slowing down the chain reaction. However the reactor core will still remain hot for several hours, or days. So if not cooled properly the core will melt, and in worst case, breach the encapsulation.

Where i go (Swedish university) we started with linear algebra the first semester and then took single and multi variable calculus the second semester (though, they're called mathematical analysis in Sweden). The only use i've seen for calculus so far is in the physics course that we are also required to take from some reason.

Maybe there are these classic Diablo II sort of glitches that enables duping of equipment etc. For example, in the good old days before the game was patched, i could give you a weapon and then pull the network cable out. When i later came back online, I would still have the weapon and you would have a duped copy.

They don't have a serious security policy/system on their computers?

Wat? Are they religious, thought this was a science oriented school? Btw. they didn't say anything about bullying. Bringing electronics, home made stuff or potentially dangerous things to school is not mentioned.

Police Called Over 11-Year-Old's Science Project 687

garg0yle writes "Police in San Diego were called to investigate an 11-year-old's science project, consisting of 'a motion detector made out of an empty Gatorade bottle and some electronics,' after the vice-principal came to the conclusion that it was a bomb. Charges aren't being laid against the youth, but it's being recommended that he and his family 'get counseling.' Apparently, the student violated school policies — I'm assuming these are policies against having any kind of independent thought?"

MiFi Attack Exploits GPS To Reveal User's Location 62

An anonymous reader writes "Security researcher Adam Baldwin has identified that the Sprint and Verizon MiFi devices are vulnerable to a multitude of attacks. Combining these attacks together, an attacker can gain the GPS location of the MiFi device without the user becoming immediately aware. The attack can be successfully executed without authentication and even if the GPS has been disabled by the administrator." There's a video, but a handy text summary, too. Upshot: "Any MiFi user that visits a specially crafted page will give up their GPS location to the attacker."
