Daydreaming Is Really Complex Problem-Solving 138

beefsprocket writes "ScienceDaily reports that 'A new University of British Columbia study finds that our brains are much more active when we daydream than previously thought. The study, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (abstract), finds that activity in numerous brain regions increases when our minds wander. It also finds that brain areas associated with complex problem-solving — previously thought to go dormant when we daydream — are in fact highly active during these episodes. "Mind wandering is typically associated with negative things like laziness or inattentiveness," says lead author, Prof. Kalina Christoff, UBC Dept. of Psychology. "But this study shows our brains are very active when we daydream — much more active than when we focus on routine tasks."'"

I actually picked up one of those brain reader things. I got the OCZ NIA since it was on sale. It's pretty cool too, totally not worth the money, but I forgot to return it before my refund time was up. The only thing that it's better at than a mouse and keyboard is for fast reaction clicking. Though that's muscle control, the eeg sensor is only good for watching yourself wander randomly in a small circle.

I don't know. I'd actually like to see this go to trial. I want there to be a precedent set that this kind of bullshit is unwanted. If they have a jury trial I feel that at least ONE person will refuse to vote guilty and it'll be hung. Better yet they should get a jury of nothing but morons so the supreme court can throw it out.

It makes more sense if you merely think about the two of them as functions that take a string and put it on the screen. However the very concept of those dots requires an in-depth explanation of the paradigm of Object-Oriented-Programming whereas the cout is just a function. Which one is simpler? cout and the funky look really stupid and weird, but the concepts contained in the line are not complex in the least. However, teaching C requires a lot of glossing over and "black magic" explanations at the start as well. Arrays are necessary for even the simplest programs, yet to explain them requires an in-depth explanation of how memory itself works and pointers to addresses. Java abstracts the memory out of the question, which is both good and bad. Really they're both incredibly complex in even the simplest of situations, but students just need to understand that learning a language requires learning a plethora of ideas that are barely related to the writing itself. A monkey can write code, it's not hard. The hard part is figuring out the underlying algorithms and math.

Google Can Predict the Flu 289

An anonymous reader mentions Google Flu Trends, a newly unveiled initiative of Google.org, Google's philanthropic arm. The claim is that this Web service, which aggregates search data to track outbreaks of influenza, can spot disease trends up to 2 weeks before Centers for Disease Control data can. The NYTimes writeup begins: "What if Google knew before anyone else that a fast-spreading flu outbreak was putting you at heightened risk of getting sick? And what if it could alert you, your doctor and your local public health officials before the muscle aches and chills kicked in? That, in essence, is the promise of Google Flu Trends, a new Web tool ... unveiled on Tuesday, right at the start of flu season in the US. Google Flu Trends is based on the simple idea that people who are feeling sick will tend to turn to the Web for information, typing things like 'flu symptoms; or 'muscle aches' into Google. The service tracks such queries and charts their ebb and flow, broken down by regions and states."

Philosophy and Computer Science Revisited 204

Soren Kierkegaard writes "While reading the two-and-a-half-year-old Slashdot post on Does Philosophy have a role in Computer Science, it occurred to me that over these past few years Philosophy has a more prominent role in Computer Science then ever before. Cognitive Science and Computer Ethics are more established disciplines in universities, and the numbers of philosophy graduates double majoring in computer science and information systems are climbing. Is a merger of Philosophy, a discipline steeped in history and intelligent thought, and Computer Science, a discipline that looks to the future, the best of both worlds?"

How Do I Get Open Source Programs Written For Me? 285

An anonymous reader writes "I am a biomedical researcher interested in having general-purpose, scientific programs developed and released as open source. Interface design and reusability of the code are of primary importance to me. For my purpose, Cocoa applications relying on Core Data seem to be the best way to get the job done quickly. While I have some programming experience, I have few connections to the industrial world. So my question to Slashdot readers is: how do I find someone (individual or business) to write high-quality programs? Are there reputable contractors experienced in Cocoa? What sort of rates should I expect, to use as a starting point in negotiations? Would a requirement that programs are released as open source make it more or less difficult to find someone to do the job?"
