Given the slow drip of information from LastPass on this, they might not be pointing fingers because they don't have solid details yet. I mean they aren't even naming the media software that was affected which seems a much lower bar to clear than potentially which nation-state (if any) was involved.

And I can no more access the xBox live store to buy games for my Playstation than I can use Steam to buy games for my Switch than I can use the PSN store to buy games for my PC than I can use the Android play store to buy games for my iPhone. Nor do I get all of the games I bought on the Switch when I start up the Playstation, iPhone, or PC.

Several of those services (all?) allow you to purchase through someone other than directly through them. For instance several of my steam games came from humble bundles. Additionally, most people only have one phone. Ownership of multiple gaming platforms is common.

Your reasoning is about as sound as saying that Harry Potter is Star Wars. Sure at a superficial high level the story has similarities, but as soon as you look at any of the details you realize that they're actually quite different.

Except the app store controls 100% of the app marketplace on iPhones/iPads. And once you've bought into the ecosystem it's not as easy to navigate away. If you've purchased a bunch of apps on the app store, even if they exist on the play store you don't automatically gain those purchases when migrating.

This is also complicated by the fact that studies show apple users are more likely to make app purchases than android users.

You can't just simply dismiss the merits because of android having a larger adoption in the smartphone market as a whole.

Comment It doesn't help that phone subsidies have gone (Score 2) 191

With pretty much every carrier doing away from the 2 year contract with higher service fees to subsidize your phone, it's little wonder people are holding on to their phones longer. It used to be you were dumb if you didn't upgrade your phone every 2 years because you didn't get a discount on service. Now that you get cheaper service but pay full price for the phone, it really takes a lot more for someone to need to upgrade.

The only issue now is that all phones don't have replaceable batteries. And with Apple realizing that offering cheap battery replacements extended the life of the phone and demolished their sales, you can bet that no one will offer user serviceable batteries unless forced to by legislation. If it's cost prohibitive to replace the battery, suddenly that new phone looks a lot more attractive.
