Comment Re: OpenAI is just the best... Period (Score 1) 25

I feel 'best' is very subjective here. In my tests, the free Gemini 2.5 pro version through ai.dev and the Gemini app beats matches or beats $200 ChatGPT subscription on research, coding and integrations (at least with the apps I use). I don't do deep math so can't comment on that aspect.

Why anyone would pay $200 (or even $20) to OpenAI completely baffles me at this point TBH.

The $14 Gsuite enterprise plan that gives me all that OpenAI gives me for $200 and a lot more including 2 TB of free storage, own domain and email, and a lot more, and much better data protection promises.

I lean democratic on most issues but the guy has a point. The system seems rigged in a way that one person in power with an agenda can do active harm to an entity without consequences.

I worked at Meta for a few years, and the competition angle IMO is just not true. Meta is under tremendous competitive pressure from TikTok on Social, YouTube on video, Twitter on reach, Apple and Microsoft on AR/VR, etc. Plus Apple, EU and various recent regulations have severely restricted their revenue growth from personalized ads.

Just because there are a couple of big players doesn't mean the market isn't competitive.

Comment Use Google Search and local stores (Score 2) 106

I have switched almost completely to using Google Search. It gives you results from many sites, the ads are much more clearly marked, you get a nice blend of ads, organic product results, reviews, install guides, etc and there is a dedicated shopping tab.

I also increasing find better deals from non-Amazon sites than from Amazon. And pretty much everyone gives free or very reasonably priced shipping anyways. Even USPS delivers in 2-3 business days on average for most products I order in my experience, so the Prime Next Day value is only for urgent stuff, but for that, why not drive over to your local stores and give them some business? Keeps the local economy healthy, increases competition and diversity of choices and you usually get as good or a better deal (everyone does price match these days).

In short, why use a trillion dollar middleman company with questionable ethics when you and your community is better off not using them?

especially in Republican states. There are already strong restrictions against competing with the monopoly providers in many states: https://broadbandnow.com/repor... . I suspect if this kind of thing becomes common enough or gets enough attention, Comcast will step up their lobbying to get such practices banned. They may even succeed, especially in Republican states which tend to be strongly pro-monopoly by private companies.

Microsoft Sends Flowers To Internet Explorer 6 Funeral 151

Several readers have written with a fun followup to yesterday's IE6 funeral. Apparently Microsoft, in a rare moment of self-jest, took the time to send flowers, condolences, and a promise to meet at MIX. The card reads: "Thanks for the good times IE6, see you all @ MIX when we show a little piece of IE Heaven. The Internet Explorer Team @ Microsoft."

North Korea's Own OS, Red Star 316

klaasb writes "North Korea's self-developed computer operating system, named 'Red Star,' was brought to light for the first time by a Russian satellite broadcaster yesterday. North Korea's top IT experts began developing the Red Star in 2006, but its composition and operation mechanisms were unknown until the internet version of the Russia Today TV program featured the system, citing the blog of a Russian student who goes to the Kim Il-sung University in Pyongyang."

NHS Should Stop Funding Homeopathy, Says Parliamentary Committee 507

An anonymous reader writes "Homeopathic remedies work no better than placebos, and so should no longer be paid for by the UK National Health Service, a committee of British members of parliament has concluded. In preparing its report, the committee, which scrutinizes the evidence behind government policies, took evidence from scientists and homeopaths, and reviewed numerous reports and scientific investigations into homeopathy. It found no evidence that such treatments work beyond providing a placebo effect." Updated 201025 19:40 GMT by timothy: This recommendation has some people up in arms.
