8-Year Fan-Made Game Project Shut Down By Activision 265

An anonymous reader writes "Activision, after acquiring Vivendi, became the new copyright holder of the classic King's Quest series of adventure game. They have now issued a cease and desist order to a team which has worked for eight years on a fan-made project initially dubbed a sequel to the last official installment, King's Quest 8. This stands against the fact that Vivendi granted a non-commercial license to the team, subject to Vivendi's approval of the game after submission. After the acquisition, key team members had indicated on the game's forums (now stripped of their original content by order of Activision) that Activision had given the indication that it intended to keep its current fan-game licenses, but was not interested in issuing new ones."

Feed Jobs officially confirmed for WWDC keynote (engadget.com)

Not that there was any question of who'd be delivering this year's WWDC keynote, but for those concerned it might not be Steve, Apple allayed all worries today by confirming His Jobsness is indeed dishing (and thankfully not for three hours). Of course, with the iPhone launch scheduled within the next couple of weeks after the show, we expect to be hearing a lot about that little number. As might be expected, attendees will get to see a "feature-complete" version of Leopard, and attendees will receive another copy of the beta to tinker with until October, when the real deal hits the streets. Sounds like all those secrets about what 10.5 can really do will be revealed that day, so mark your calendars, it's all going down Monday, June 11th.

Ad-Supported Free Music Downloads Doomed to Failure? 226

madonna writes "CNET extensively explains why the new We7.com download service — which offers ad-embedded free music downloads without DRM — is doomed to failure. 'This service absolutely, categorically will not succeed. You can quote us on that. It's true the best way to combat piracy is to provide a realistic and affordable alternative, and free is certainly affordable. But music downloaders are not going to switch to using a service that costs the same as using BitTorrent or Limewire, but comes with abominable disclaimers or advertisements.'"

I ran around querying on other IRC channels, especially with people who were following up and having lively banter about MacWorld Expo; and asked them about MacWorld Expo. Apparently, I had 25 responses. Half of them were from the United States and they too could not access Macworld Expo AND Apple's US store site. The rest were sparsely placed all over the globe. I believe other Apple's regional sites serving their respective regions were not greatly affected because most people would just key in "apple.com" into their address bar.
