Comment Blackberry's Demise... (Score 1) 150

Was the result of being the worst smartphone of the bunch. I've used them for years, (because I have to), and my current model is so unintuitive and poorly designed that I've stopped wearing it. I actually wish I had my old Curve because it was more usable. Consumers don't remember them giving access to foreign governments. They wanted Angry Birds.

Comment These are kids building projects, right? (Score 1) 956

This kind of thing really gets my goat. I put into the context of myself when I was a kid. I brought stuff I built into school all the time. Things that lit up or buzzed or counted up or down with LED digits.

Once when I went through my "High Voltage" phase, I build a small project box with a transformer, momentary switch and a 9 volt battery. When you interrupted the circuit it collapsed the field and produced a small electric shock. I built it in a box marked "Lie Detector"! I had fun all day tricking people with it. Today, I would have been sued or arrested.

In the end, engineering and electronics became big areas of exploration in my life and career. It's sad to see this happen to a kid because the negative impact is indelible. Reminds me of the Aqua Teen LED sign event in Boston in 2007.

Gulf Oil Spill Disaster — Spawn of the Living Dead 228

grrlscientist writes "A recently published study, intended to provide data to commercial fisheries in the Gulf of Mexico so they maximize their catch of Yellowfin Tuna, Thunnus albacares, whilst avoiding bycatch of critically endangered Atlantic (Northern) Bluefin Tuna, Thunnus thynnus, suggests that the Deepwater Horizon oil leak may devastate the endangered Atlantic bluefin population, causing it to completely collapse or possibly go extinct."

This is good news.

For those of use who use flash (for instructional simulations) this means (hopefully) new tools and a chance to deal with the accessibility issues flash has.

While AS3 has improved accessibility classes, products like Articulate and Camtasia have been slow to enable them in their products.
