Comment if our gov was serious about climate change (Score 1) 405

It would ban airplane travel by Members of Parliament. Since air travel made it possible to fly in and out of Ottawa every week, I wonder what the carbon footprint of 338 MPs is. None of them move their families to Ottawa anymore - it's just an air-commute now. They even cut back the Friday House of Commons schedule so people could leave early.

When the power goes out for a day or two, it's nice to have gas. It makes you less reliant on the government in times of no electricity in winter. There's ways around that, but there it is. When the next ice storm hits the Northeast, all those people just on electricity will be going to a shelter because they have no way to stay warm.

Comment because base closures are poison to politicians (Score 1) 403

The current ICBM force consists of Minuteman III missiles located at the 90th Missile Wing at F.E. Warren Air Force Base, Wyoming; the 341st Missile Wing at Malmstrom Air Force Base, Montana; and the 91st Missile Wing at Minot Air Force Base, North Dakota. Not upgrading the missile fleet means the end of these bases, and the jobs that come with them in areas where they represent a huge piece of the economy. "Malmstrom alone is one of the region’s largest employers. The base had an economic impact of $372 million in 2019, including direct and indirect jobs as well as expenditures on construction and other services." Local politics and economics hold more weight than strategic and technical sense. Try closing a base and getting re-elected in today's USA.
