"It should be borne in mind that there is nothing more difficult to arrange, more doubtful of success, and more dangerous to carry through than initiating changes. The innovator makes enemies of all those who prospered under the old order, and only lukewarm support is forthcoming from those who would prosper under the new."
-- Niccolo Machiavelli

Thanks for mentioning the article update! That makes the push for Debian in one area but not in another into an even more interesting choice!

On the stated "straw that broke the camel's back" for CPU architecture:-

RHEL 8 / Rocky 8 just needs x86-64-v1, which is really old and is essentially all 64-bit x86 CPUs
RHEL 9 / Rocky 9 requires x86-64-v2 (if you're on x86), and I understand it's supported until 2032 - if that featured in their decision
RHEL 10 / Rocky 10 requires x86-64-v3 (see https://docs.rockylinux.org/10... ) and can make 2013-era Xeons obsolete.

I've an older Dell R720 server that can't run RHEL 10/ Rocky10 on bare metal, but it's still quite functional otherwise. So I suppose it comes down to what hardware CERN have available and want to keep operational, whilst using the same OS across the whole campus.
If interested, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/... has more details on the CPU levels.

And I'll note for completeness that like Debian, AlmaLinux still only requires x86-64-v1, so CERN did have the option of an "almost clone" of RHEL.

All those datacentres around the globe powering Google, Meta, Amazon & AWS, Azure, Anthropic, OpenAI, Cloudflare; rack upon rack stuffed with servers consuming all the CPU, GPU, storage and memory the world can make... and they're (mostly) running Linux.
Feels like they should be counted too.

From the article: "Its remarkable transparency, transmitting 98% of light..."

On a simple read, the article's phrasing would suggest graphene is very transparent. However, graphene is an exceedingly opaque substance. It's"remarkable transparancy" is remarkable primarily because it's really not very transparent at all.
That 'transmits 98% of light' is what happens when sending light through just a single-atom-thick layer of graphene.

Graphene can be roughly described as a single layer of graphite. Many folk are aware of graphite being very opaque - it is used as a pencil 'lead' in normal wooden pencils. Its stunning opacity is one reason that it works so well to leave visible marks on paper.

Not so much a correction as simply continuing the story from where you reached!

Microsoft moved over to using git quite some time back - and updated git to handle the vast amount of files that compile into Windows.
See https://devblogs.microsoft.com... for a readable writeup on this (from back in 2017)

The question states as a precondition that getNextLoc will never be called for the bottom right corner.
Also that it will always be given a valid row index, and a valid column index.

Therefore, regardless of all other sane considerations, within this question the students explicitly don't need to validate inputs, and shouldn't.

...which isn't really a great way of teaching programming :(

...in about three months, when 24.04.1 comes out.

Some references will suggest using the '-d' flag to do-release-upgrade, but that has a very limited window (weeks) where it may do what you want it to.

So very true. And even if there was a nominal budget, mysteriously there's no time available in any project plan for staff to take a course.
Always just "learn on the job whilst the system is in production".

In an improvement from the ISS, at least on the moon the astronauts won't have to worry about shaking the moon apart whilst using their micro-gravity exercise machines...

Get any sort of sizeable mass of spheres - in order to have an appreciable gravitational field - and you better hope those two spheres do not attract each other...

If they've any sense (and I'm explicitly not claiming that they do), a system such as this will run in a cloud of privately-hosted servers in multiple separate bases, secured by the military.
Or they may just host it on AWS or Azure, as some consultant somewhere will indicate "that will cost less".

(Narrator voice in 2033) "It didn't cost less."

Your accounting is off by quite a bit...
Recording 5 terabytes every week means that the recordings for the whole year total 52*5 = 260 terabytes of data.
If it's charged at $5 per terabyte per month, then keeping that 260 TB for one year will cost $5 * 12 months * 260 TB = $15,500

Interesting to know. For information, it works on a Windows as well; so if you're looking to see Apple Maps via Duck Duck Go's 'Maps' tab, you can.
Every day's a school day!

Intriguing; I hadn't considered that this may be all about setting a precedent to flip - "If you don't recommend my channel I'll sue you!".
