You lucked out. In mine they abandoned the fiber in the ground, refused to provide service, refused to sell to local provider. Local provider ended up adding their fiber right alongside the existing.
Everything does not need to be on the freaking cloud. 3D printers have very limited need to reach the outside world other than perhaps firmware updates. It is done to attempt to gather user data and be able to maintain control of HW after sell.
The audience would be much to broad there and even adding breakout rooms formalizes things too much. It's not the same as stopping to chat for 2-3 mins in the hallway. Digital methods of person to person interaction can never fully replace face to face communications.
I have stuck with zwave devices as much as I can for this reason. I started with Smarthings and when that went to crap I was able to switch the controller to a home assistant hub and the end devices remained functional.
