I agree completely. As a matter of fact, I have used mostly console apps for all of my work for years.
My point was not that a system is no good without GUI apps (or even that KDE or gnome are necessary for gui stuff -- fvwm suited me fine for many years). I was simply assuming that the witness was trying to talk about Windows in the context of desktop functionality most consumers expect. In that regard, linux-based systems do require some kind of window manager and some gui apps. My wife, my parents, and most of my friends are about as likely to fire up emacs and write something in LaTeX as I am to write something in Word. The argument should have been that popular desktop systems, such as linux boxes running KDE or GNOME, include Internet functionality in much the same way Windows does. That would have been a valid argument. The appropriate rebuttal, of course, would have been to point out that it's very easy with any of those systems to choose an Internet browser other than the one bundled with the system.
I personally think MS is full of shit. I also think people who make broad assumptions about someone's preferences (e.g., that he's "a microsoft patsy") on the basis of a brief, limited comment are full of shit.
