Journal Baron_911's Journal: Small Companies + Programming + Nebraska = STUPIDITY 5

I hate working. I work for a company with 2 members, myself and my boss. It drives me crazy. I want to be a part of a TEAM, not just sit here by myself trying to figure out everything... And the programs we write are boring... Thinking of moving to Northern California... If anyone happens to stumble on this in that area, whats the job situation like? Am I gonna be flippin burgers?? I will if I have too... prolly get paid more than I do now... I work almost 50hrs a week with no overtime and no benifits AT ALL for $2000 a month... that's like 10 bux an hour... Programmers generally make more than this, right? *sigh*...

Don't worry, i'm done whining now. At least to my /. journal >:)

  • Hourly rates will vary radically by location. Here in Atlanta I make nearly $30/hour, but in California it would be MUCH higher. A friend on mine in NYC charges $125/hour for consulting (and he's actually worth it - the most genius programmer I've ever met!).

Of course, cost of living in California or NYC is hideous. Even at $125/hour, my friend still lives in a tiny apartment in Soho and spends a fortune on taxis. So don't just worry yourself about wages, but also consider cost of living.
    • Yeah i'm hoping that nortern California is a little better off. I have a few friends that live way north that don't pay too much as far as rent, etc. go, but i'm not sure if the IT biz is very strong that far north. (i'm talkin like almost the border...) ps. That was fast! :P
      • If it's that far north, may as well go to Washington and be assimiliated into the Evil Empire ;-)

A friend of mine just moved from Fresno to New York for lack of jobs there, but he wasn't a programmer (he was a salesman for some type of spectrometer thing). But then, Fresno is more central then northern, so who knows?
        • I thought about Washington too... i've heard nothing but good things about it... but, being an enterprising young man, i'm thinking that California is the hotbed for tech stuff, so I think it would be cool to go try and 'make my mark'. I just don't think I have the experiance yet to get the kind of job I want. (I've only been professionally programming for 6 months... a year of exp. under my belt would be nice...) I've learned alot though!!! >:)
