Did the congress put any limits or conditions on receiving the bailout money? Was there any legal bar to them doing this? No? Then of course they were going to do this. Like every company, utilities are in it to make money, not be nice. So of course they took the no strings attached money and still kept doing what they do. And look the people they cut off probably did owe them for the electricity and gas they used, and probably didn't pay, so it's not like the utility companies weren't within their legal rights to do it. If our representatives gave them free cash, well we need to be talking to our representatives about that.

And Andrew Carnegie built magnificent libraries and started the Carnegie Society to fund scientific research. But he was still responsible for the carnage, riots, and evil of the Homestead Steel Mills. All his good works could not bring back a single one of the dead. Now Bezos thinks he can pull the same philanthropic mask on his treatment of his workers. Sorry, but no sale. The modern Robber Barons appear no different in the treatment of their workers than the older batch, nor do they look any different in their desire to whitewash their image after the fact.

Naturally the only reason the USAF would have for funding the development of larger super and hyper-sonic jets is for executive toys. Certainly for such folks time is money and getting important folks to important meetings with less travel time is, well, important. But I can't help thinking that once you've funded the development and production of much larger aircraft with such speed capability that you can use the same tech to make well, faster bombers, faster fighters, faster versions of a C-130 equivalent. Because the other place that time counts is in armed response to world events. Anything that shortens the decision, response, action loop is useful. And the ability to move, even minor amounts of personnel and equipment to a crisis spot is useful. But of course the USAF, I am sure, never even thought about such applications when it paid to have something the size of an executive business jet with hypersonic capability built. After all, if it had, it would surely have said so right? And in no way could the advertised uses for these craft be a cover for a far different plane, now could it. Ummm yeah.
