Comment Internet Pipes (Score 1) 79

This is a case of the folks who own the water pipes selling the water. However, in the case of water, they went to government utilities, and that made sense for all. Now we need to move the intertubes to be a government utility, which will be better for everybody but unethical corporations. Simple fix really.

I have a Galaxy S20 Ultra. I have 5G in my house (I didn't the first couple weeks of ownership tho, even in the middle of Dallas, TX). My battery eats up about 30% per day. So I think this may be a bug on some phones, but clearly it isn't 5G being the culprit, but the 5G connectivity on some phones, as I do not see that issue.

I'm in Dallas as well, and went to the Frys in Garland (there is another in Plano). The one in Plano doesn't look as bad, but the Garland store feels downright creepy. There is hardly anything electronics, stuff went out of stuck and wasn't restocked, etc. I asked around. One employee said he had no idea, another said they were going to stop carrying inventory, and yet another gave me that look like "duuuh", but it was clear they were all told to not say they were going out of business..... but they simply gotta be. However, Microcenter in Dallas is still alive and well, stocked to the gills, and a great store!

Comment Public clouds are not cheap (Score 1) 128

Funny that so many people think they save money by going to AWS/Azure. There are only 2 ways to save money by going to these services: #1. Your IT department was absolutely horrible, didn't maintain systems, had tons of extra stuff that wasn't being used properly, and probably had too many bad engineers. #2. You only use very minor little parts of the clouds. Like spinning up an Azure App Service website vs hosting it on a lone server. There is no other way to save money with the clouds. I've worked with numerous companies now as a consultant, and ALL of them pay a LOT more for the "public cloud" than they would by just owning physical hardware in 2 data centers doing the same thing. In most cases, companies are fine with it because they no longer own the hardware, even if costs can easily be 500% or more based on just owning redundant hardware in multiple data centers. Plus, all these public clouds have bugs when used, and if you have to use the web interface for things it is much slower than any other method for doing your job. If you think the web is fast, you are probably just too young to remember what a good EXE can give you instead. Sounds like Bank of America has a decent CEO/CIO, now if they can just figure out the customer service side...

I worked at match.com supporting the technical side of the site for quite a few years. I left a few years before this lawsuit takes place. While I do not believe they were doing it while I was there, that company has changed a lot since then (outsourcing everything for example), it doesn't mean they haven't done it since. I had fond memories of the place for a while, lots of smart folks, lots of money, lost of tech, but after the first couple years of that it got worse. Poor and excessive management (SEVEN layers of management for a team of 30!), lots of big ego's, and I was very happy to go. But after reading that article, wow. Really spot on and opened my eyes. I can't see any fault with anything in it. Thanks for posting it!

Amazon does a lot of bad.... Then they do something like this to offset it... I REALLY just have no idea where to place this company on my ethical radar. I usually err on the side of good, because its awesome getting a tube of toothpaste sent to my door in a few hours.

My Place has 0O0O in it. My tollway company is some foreign company, they see it as 0000 because according to them, the state doesn't have the letter O. The state sees it as 0O0O, because it knows O's, and handles it. But I can't use the HOV discount, because the tollway system can't recognize my plate nor my toll tag, so they just bill at the higher rate and somehow can't correlate the plates. Its a huge PITA, and I though about changing my plate to something else because I lost at being a smartass.
