  • Interesting, as always.

I recently discovered that one of my ancestors (Young Winkler by name, I believe) grew up in Cook County, IL along with Abraham Lincoln, and they evidently were friends.

Lincoln represented my ancestor in a paternity lawsuit, but also... when he and his sons were arrested and thrown in jail for publicly denouncing the Union and the Union's actions, he wrote a letter to Lincoln in the white house, who sent a telegraph back to the jail, ordering their release.

I was quite tickled to learn
    • I was quite tickled to learn about this-- it's amazing what sort of gems can be hidden in family histories.

No doubt. I love stories like this and they can only emerge once we start to invest in historical research and can recover documents from the past.

  • I fly on Delta all the time (usually first class recently) and I've never seen a power adaptor. Of course my battery still lasts about 3.5 to 4 hours on a charge if I turn down the brightness a little.

Lucky guy..... Who are you working for? We scientists usually just get stuck back in coach, although on our Hawaii (vacation) trip, the first class seats on a 767-400 had Empower outlets.

I can usually get about 3.5 hrs out of my three year old Powerbook battery, but one does not always have access to a full battery before getting on the plane.

      • I work for IBM, and I'm Silver (nearly Gold) Medallion. Upgrades have been easy to get recently, and I end up buying Y class tickets shortly before I'm actually flying so I get first class more often than not.

We went coach to Hawaii though. :)

    • Relatively speaking, the cranial vault is smaller with respect to homo sapiens. However, eyes have evolved to accommodate certain optical properties, particularly if the monkeys are nocturnal, like the new world monkey douroucoulis, which happens to be the only truly nocturnal monkey by the way.

Nice photos, but not enough text.

What does your family history have to do with the OSS?

      It was deliberate. Sorry...

What does your family history have to do with the OSS?

It's a long story, but there is a bit of a multi-generational family legacy in the intelligence community.

      • Even better now! You should at least mentioned that you, if not a man of mystery, are a son or grandson of mystery. I like the anonymous hallway, too. You're lucky you didn't stop to talk with Rove, he probably still cherry-picks, especially from anyone vaguely related to the intelligence community.

JONES: Hello, Mr. Rove, how are you?

ROVE: 'Could be worse. Where did you come from?

JONES: I was at the National Archives looking up information on the OSS, and I just had a great dinner at a fantast

Hardly mysterious. I am just a scientist doing his part to help us understand vision, so to speak.

I like the anonymous hallway, too.

The amazing thing about so many hallways in D.C. is how damned expensive they look. Think about how much money that hallway would cost you to duplicate in your house (even without all the security).

Memory fault -- brain fried
