Comment Internet Hosts Consortium (Score 1) 158

What I would like to see is all these vendors with critical web services band together. What if Netflix, Microsoft, Google, Wikipedia, Reddit, etc formed a sort of NATO organization? If you attack one of us we all respond? Say Verizon slows or degrades Netflix in some way? What if then Google and the other members blocked their site\services for all Verizon customers? I know it sounds bad, but what if Verizon customers got a page stating that Verizon was breaking certain services and here is a list of alternative ISPs in your area? Crap, I think they should get together and preemptively attack the ISPs. What if Google, Netflix, Microsoft, Reddit got together a told ISPs if you want to continue to provide access to our service you NEED TO PAY US? That would change their opinion of Net Neutrality QUICKLY! What would internet service from Verizon look like if it didn't include Google services? I think they have the upper hand if they want to play hardball....

Unemployment Hits New High In Silicon Valley 338

Though there may be some degree of cushion for IT workers in the US generally, Slatterz writes "The steadily climbing unemployment rate in Silicon Valley has reached a shocking four-year high of 6.6 per cent. Recent statistics indicate that the percentage of unemployed workers in the sunny state of California has increased to 7.7 in August — up from 7.4 per cent in July. Jeffrey Lindsay of Bernstein Research explained that a number of Internet firms were chronically overstaffed."

This is brilliant! Release a letter stating that you would be interested if there is a new board. Have Icahn's board elected, which from all I have seen is completely incompetent of running the company should a merger NOT take place. Then make a half-hearted attempt at the new merger, announce that you cannot reach an agreement and now you've hobbled another competitor without spending a dime. Now, if they can just get their act together they could swoop in and grab some of Yahoo! market share. I can't tell if this is incompetence on Microsoft's part or pure brilliance, but it may work out great for them....
