The pentalobe screws were made precisely to make it harder to repair. To counter your GM example, there wasn't a place anywhere to buy the pentalobe drivers. The didn't want to make money selling the tools, they want you to buy a whole new phone because the repair prices are too high. Also Apple geniuses were putting them on older phones that were brought into the stores for minor repairs, without asking customers about the replacement. Some info here on them:

They need to have security between the two systems, and from what I've read they do, but it isn't perfect. They problem with what you are proposing is that you can't change any engine/suspension settings that way. That's part of the feature set of the car. How would you turn on insane, or the new ludicrous mode?

I think the bigger problem they need to fix is to start signing the downloads.


Invisibility Cloak Created In 3-D 113

An anonymous reader writes "Scientists have created the first device to render an object invisible in three dimensions. The 'cloak,' described in the journal Science (abstract; full text requires login), hid an object from detection using light of wavelengths close to those that are visible to humans. Previous devices have been able to hide objects from light travelling in only one direction; viewed from any other angle, the object would remain visible. This is a very early but significant step towards a true invisibility cloak." The "object" hidden in this work was a bump one micrometer high. The light used was just longer than the wavelengths our eyes detect. To get a visible-light cloak, the features of the cloaking metamaterial would need to be reduced in size from 300 nm to 10 nm.

In a response that seems more than a little strange, Intel brought in the release of performance data on the Core 2 Extreme QX9770 processor which runs at 3.20 GHz on a 1600 MHz front-side bus. What makes this release odd is that AMD's parts don't even come close to competing with the existing Intel high-end CPUs and that there is no chipset from Intel or elsewhere that actually supports a 1600 MHz FSB! Using current motherboards that were overclocked to run the QX9770, the performance of the new processor is simply the fastest desktop processor we have seen."
