Comment Sad that Google already has the metadata to block (Score 2) 28

It's sad that Google already has the metadata to allow users to make educated guesses about the authenticity of each extension. Each extension needs to declare up front what permissions it needs to run. Google can simply list these permissions up front and even generate a score system for easier understanding. This won't even require developers to update their extensions and can be done in the UI only.

And would you do that with US software in the USA?

I would do the same for government mandated software in the USA. And if backdoors were found, we would report it to the press and try to sue the government to get them to stop doing it. I believe in China doing any of those 3 things would land you in prison.

Comment Interesting to see the efficiency/accuracy levels (Score 1) 104

It would be interesting to hear how well this plant goes. Efficient manufacturing is not something that every country can successfully pull off. That's why China cannot successfully duplicate everything the Germans and the Japanese make because the cultural mindset of their workforce are just not the same. In China, some assembly tasks are not just cheaper but are more accurate when performed by a human over being performed by a robot arm.

Chrome did a much better implementation of WebExtensions than Firefox. Even if an extension requires ALL_URL permissions, the user can still configure it to work with a subset of whitelisted domains. They can also configure it work only after the user has interacted with the webpage.
