My grandparents still have one. They're probably the last people in town who are still paying for a party line. And they don't want to get rid of it because the prices are locked in, so they're $14 phone bill would likely triple. The last time I went back home for a visit I asked about getting if they move or eventually pass away. Come to find out my mom has had dibs on it since before I was born.

Keep It Simple Stupid. The thing is a tank compared to the new models, and has a considerably larger capacity. Why the hell would anyone want to 'upgrade' to a shittier model? Until 2 years ago when I picked up my Galaxy S3, I was still rocking a flip phone. Why? Because most networks didn't have enough stable 3G coverage, and I wasn't sold on the durability of a touchscreen phone. Until Apple comes out with an actual upgrade to the iPod line, I'm quite happy to continue using my 5th gen Classic.

Says the linked story: "The announcement did not state whether the two-part prequel to The Lord of the Rings would be shot in New Zealand. Matt Dravitzki, Jackson's assistant at Wingnut Films, said an annoucement on the place of filming would be 'probably a week or two away.'"

Russian Army Upgrades Its Inflatable Weapons 197

jamax writes "According to the BBC: 'The Russian military has come up with an inventive way to deceive the enemy and save money at the same time: inflatable weapons. They look just like real ones: they are easy to transport and quick to deploy. You name it, the Russian army is blowing it up: from pretend tanks to entire radar stations.' But the interesting thing is these decoys are not dumb - actually they appear to be highly advanced for what I thought was a WWII-grade aerial photography countermeasures. Apparently they have heat signatures comparable with the military tech they represent, as well as the same radar signature."
