Slightly dated but still extremely valuable is "Web Site Usability: A Designer's Guide" by User Interface Engineering (uie.com) -- headed by usability guru Jared Spool. The book is based on actual user tests, and there's lots of other valuable stuff on the web site. The company hosts (still?) an annual usability conference. FULL DISCLOSURE: I helped on this book while I worked for User Interface Engineering.
