"Appliance" not tied to a service provider? (Score 1)

Does anyone know of an "appliance", planned or current, that _won't_ be tied to an ISP? By this I mean some minimal hardware set up that is sold for its actual cost, but that can be used with any ISP? This would do a lot, maybe, to protect that "freedom of information" someone was talking about.

If one isn't planned now, maybe somebody should get started.
