It really helps to enjoy gaming from all eras. "What's that? Crysis won't budge beyond 12FPS at Medium settings? Oh well, guess I'll go check out Tron 2.0, still never finished that one. Or hey, let's play the Monkey Island series again!"
I tend to upgrade gaming builds every four years, which is fairly economical considering how fast tech and software moves ahead. And there isn't any need to purchase bleeding edge components to last you that span, either, so long as you don't require perfect frame rates with max settings during that time. Most games are very playable when not maxed out, much as my little gamer heart would love to do so every now and again.
(And then there's always overclocking. Maximize your investment, some will say!)
