Comment Oaxaca did it right (Score 2) 110

I came in to read what people thought about what Oaxaca did...instead I just found people laughing about it or about the language, geography or whatever. Meh. Let me explain, since most people either don't read TFA or don't educate themselves further. These people asked all three cellular networks to put a tower in their village, they all said no. TONS of times. So, they took the matter into their own hands. Now all three cellular networks are asking if they can help (Read: Get a piece of the pie) I am SO happy they are the ones that are now saying NO. It's interesting what us Mexicans are able to do when we're told no. We are a stubborn bunch.

Mexican here... My brother was "taken" (they burst into his house, got him, his girlfriend and his roomie into the the trunk of a car) and we have not hear any news about him (or the others) in more than two years. I have heard grenades and shots outside my and my boyfriend's homes. Four days ago, my friend's neighbor was shot in the head because she was in the way between a cartel and something while leaving her kids at school. The secretary of defense, Domene, says it was a BIG coincidence this was just outside an ex-secretary's home. Law enforcement decided that they would not let this stuff be publicized, not in TV, not in Radio, not in Newspapers as to not scare the people... we get our information from Twitter, mostly... there's a small bunch of people that help with that. Felipe Calderon has made an even greater mess of this. And he thinks he's doing an awesome job. And I'm not even in Nuevo Laredo.

This will most probably go the way Netflix, Hulu, Pandora, Amazon MP3 Store, the Kindle and ALL others go. US Only. So all other people outside the US still have no way of seeing anything they see because of useless copyright annoyances. And I say useless because I (and several others) wanted to pay for Pandora, for Amazon MP3s, for Hulu, for the Kindle and it's books. So, it's definitely news for nerds, but, other than the US, it doesn't matter much for us, or me, at least.

Welcome to a middle class Mexican with no intentions to live in your country's world. We have the EXACT same issue that PsychoSlashDot describes, and we just go there to spend our hard earned IN MEXICO money. Funny thing, also, the latino-looking customs border people are WAY more a$$holes than the american looking ones. Those checkpoints have to be 25 miles into the border because if I don't have a permit I can't go beyond there. It just happened a month ago, we thought "what would happen?" when driving up to San Antonio, Tx, and we got turned around, had to go back to the border, get a permit and get back on the road. Yay for a fun weekend of spending in the States right?

Submission + - Mexico Government Wants all the Country's Cell # (milenio.com)

Alyssey writes: "The Mexican Government wants to have a database with every cellphone number in the country and who it belongs to. They want to tie in the CURP (Unique Registration Population Code in Spanish, like the Social Security Number in the US)with cellphone numbers. If Mexicans don't send in their number and curp via SMS before April 10, 2010 their cellphone number will be blocked.
