Comment A missed test? (Score 2, Interesting) 377
In my experience the real test of a codec is
how well it handles soft female vocals with
accompaniment. For example, Jeri Southern, Nancy Wilson and Dinah Shore all have silky voices
which many codecs tend to "erase". Few codecs
can handle the subtle shades of a female voaclist
with a soft delivery. What was once a foreground
voice suddenly is relegated to the background
as though a little mouse were singing.
Needless to say, that is not what is wanted.
I would hope that in future tests that samples of female vocalists are tested as well. Oh, and I'm talking standards and jazz vocals, not dance or metal. It is the soft subtle voice which is quashed by most codecs. Mens voices do not fare as badly because they tend to have higher harmonic content and a louder delivery, although some singers like Tony Bennett might not do as well.
