Google Releases Desktop Gadgets For Linux 172

mstrom writes "Google announced it has ported its Google Desktop Gadgets platform to Linux, making it the first cross-platform [desktop] gadgets framework. In a sign that Google is fully embracing the open source model, it admits the product is not feature-complete and has opened up the code base hosted on Google Code 'to give everyone a chance to tinker with the code powering the gadgets.' According to Google: "Gadget support is not just a single feature, but rather an entire platform for miniature applications.'"

Roland Piquepaille writes: "In 'Things that show color in the night,' the Boston Globe reports that a company named Tenebraex is helping color blind people to travel. But it's also developing goggles to help soldiers and physicians to see all colors at night, and not only the green color of current night vision systems. These goggles, which should become available this summer, will be sold for about $6,000 to the Army. But as states one of the founders of the company, with monochrome night vision, 'blood is the same color as water.' So these expensive night vision devices might be more targeted to Army physicians than to regular soldiers. Read more for additional references and pictures of the ColorPath night vision system."

It's an interesting story, but I don't think it constitutes language. How many other sounds did he make that you ignored while you were in the other room? If he by chance combined the doorbell and phone sounds, and you appeared, he associated that sound with you showing up. Since it had a favorable effect, he tried it again, and the feedback loop was strengthened. Most linguists would not consider that a form of language.
