What To Do When Broadband is Not An Option? 577

professorguy writes "I've been on the internet since 1984 (back before email addresses had @'s). But it looks like we're coming to the end of an era. From my home, I have 26.4 kbps dial-up access to the internet (you read that right). Since I am a hospital network administrator, it would be nice to do some stuff remotely when I am on 24/7 call. However, no cable or DSL comes anywhere near my house and because of the particular topography of my property (I'm on a heavily-forested, north-facing hillside), satellite is also not available. Heck, cell phones didn't even work here until January. So far, the technical people I've asked all have the same advice for reasonable connectivity: move. Move out of the house my wife and I built and lived in for 20 years. Has it really come to this? Am I doomed to be an internet refugee? Is this really my only option? Do you have an alternative solution for me?"

BitTorrent Closes Source Code 390

An anonymous reader writes ""There are two issues people need to come to grips with," BitTorrent CEO Ashwin Narvin told Slyck.com. "Developers who produce open source products will often have their product repackaged and redistributed by businesses with malicious intent. They repackage the software with spyware or charge for the product. We often receive phone calls from people who complain they have paid for the BitTorrent client." As for the protocol itself, that too is closed, but is available by obtaining an SDK license."

Submission + - Netcraft: Microsoft IIS may soon overtake Apache

benjymouse writes: From the latest Netcraft web server survey:
In the August 2007 survey we received responses from 127,961,479 sites, an increase of 2.3 million sites from last month. Microsoft continues to increase its web server market share, adding 2.6 million sites this month as Apache loses 991K hostnames. As a result, Windows improves its market share by 1.4% to 34.2%, while Apache slips by 1.7% to 48.4%. Microsoft's recent gains raise the prospect that Windows may soon challenge Apache's leadership position.

id and Valve May Be Violating GPL 399

frooge writes "With the recent release of iD's catalog on Steam, it appears DOSBox is being used to run the old DOS games for greater compatibility. According to a post on the Halflife2.net forums, however, this distribution does not contain a copy of the GPL license that DOSBox is distributed under, which violates the license. According to the DOSBox developers, they were not notified that it was being used for this release."

Comment Handwriting Recognition (Score 1) 318

I have to differ from the review in that I found the handwriting recognition to be the best I'd ever used once it had been taught some of my more "eccentric" letter formations. Surely I can't be the only one?

As for the 770, love it to bits - although until IT2006 is released (Supposedly end Q2 now) it is definately a device for the slashdot reader (Though my girlfriend loves it to bits, I have difficulty getting it off her sometimes).

Journal Journal: Boredom

well as I do I.T. support at a college and this week is half-term meaning that hardly anyone is using the I.T. I am supporting I thought I would write a journal entry. Not particulary interesting I know, but it kept me sane for a little while longer :))
