I work for a company that's completing a completly wireless backbone based on microwave technologies. Check out http://www.lmasys.com . The transmission method is subject to the weather and you need line-of-sight to the tower, but it sure beats waiting months on end for a DSL connection, especially in secondary markets and rural areas (which is what we're targeting).
