You are responsible for protecting your own research/work product. If I'm using AI for something, I not only store the results, but also the prompts and chats as text files in git pushed to a remote private repo. Because losing days, much less years of work really sucks. Though, if you are using AI to create work products, how much of that is really your work? Prompt engineering is a thing, so that's your work. And having backups of that is essential. But the output? I think that's debatable, especially if you don't give credit to AI where it is due. Did your research methods document AI in your workflows? Did your students know that materials you supplied to them in their instruction was generated by AI? Well, they do now.
