Yes it's possible to find romance online but I don't know about distance issues because I was careful only to e-mail women in the same city. Due to a very busy work and sporting life I didn't have much chance to meet women. I'm not into bars and my sports of ice dancing and kung fu tend to have much younger women than my 36 years.

Extreme honesty is the way to go. Look at online dating as a way to practise being honest with women and communicating about a lot of issues without worrying about the face to face bit.
Yes, appearance matters and sometimes you can really click with someone online and find that the physical chemistry isn't there. I recommend at least a friendly meeting before you get too committed. Don't think of yourself as shallow just because appearance matters to you. There's a difference betwen saying that every woman has to look like a supermodel and acknowledging that attraction usually has some physical component. However, if you've got to know someone online that certainly reduces the importance of the initial visual reaction. I think there's got to be a balance between getting to know each other before meeting and falling headlong in love with a complete stranger without any meeting.
My fiancee is 7 years older than me, although it's hard to tell! Most of all, I knew from our discussions that we shared many interests. She's someone that I would have definitely found initially attractive at a party but it took a few dates before our emotions really fired. We only started dating in a friendly manner because I was interested in getting back into scuba and she's an instructor - neither of us expected it to turn into the burning romance that we're enjoying.
