This was part of a tournament that he probably had a contractual obligation to compete in, dating back before the previous incident. Its also a different format, which may make a difference to him. Magnus is very concerned about his classical rating right now - not so much about his blitz or rapid rating

"More importantly I find it highly suspicious that there is no mention of exactly what Hans Niemann did that constitutes "cheating"." Used a computer to find the best moves. Most chess grandmasters agree that it'd be fairly easy to pull this off in a tournament and it's only fear of repercussions that keep it from being far more commonplace

The primary suspicion is somehow getting help from a computer, possibly from another person observing the event, plugging the position into an engine, and somehow sending Hans signals. Several high level GMs have suggested that they think its possible, even trivial, to pull this off and the only reason it doesn't happen more often is the fear of long term career consequences

>I can't see how that would work at that level of play. When you're playing at the top like those guys you need a bloody supercomputer to compete. This isn't true. Even simple computers are better than grandmasters nowadays, there are stories of top players losing chess matches to chess apps on treadmills at hotel gyms. A cell phone with access to a basic engine on the cloud like is freely available an Lichess or Chess.com would provide more than enough assistance to sway a match at the highest level. On top of that, a grand Master trying to beat a stronger grandmaster wouldn't need detailed assistance for every move, a simple signal that indicates "in this position there's one critical move that provides you a strong advantage, take the time to find it" a few times a match would be an overwhelming advantage

"Fighting games / RTS can be televised the problem comes in finding the best way to present the match. There is no John Madden for color commentary to any FPS at least not on TV." You might want to check out what MLG is doing. It hasn't quite made it to T.V. yet(MLG had a show on USA a couple years but it was more of a documentary on the players and has some stuff with ESPN but not much as far tournament gameplay right now) but all their tournaments have live, commentated streams available free on their website.
