Top engineers should market themselves using a system like actors or athletes. A lot of the jobs for top level software engineers are project based.
They should get Agents to negotiate contracts for them and market their skills for the top dollar.

Engineers today are treated like resources with experience being looked at as the number one factor in compensation.
Every engineer brings a different set of skills to the table and should be compensated based on their talent not on their experience.

Maybe they also need a reality show to make coding more relevant.

Maybe it is because of the huge global economic crisis and marketing is first to be slashed.

The company picks who to interview and they most likely pick someone from a expensive private school. The parents of these kids pay a lot of money for the degree and so they expect a lot. That expectation often transfers to the kid. Try filtering out your picks by concentrating on schools with high competition and pick the best. Also there is nothing wrong with confidence, passion and drive.

They need to give this guy something better to do.

Of course Nintendo is happy with third place as they are not at the same level as the other two and have no other reasonable choice but to go for the niche market. But don't attack and competition based strategy simply because it is not the best strategy for Nintendo. The destruction of your competitor is the basis of capitalism. It breeds innovation. What better way to do this than targeting a competitor.
