In the late 1970's the DOE developed a fusion roadmap detailing timelines and budgets. A Manhattan project style crash project that would have led to a viable reactor in the late 1980's, a more modest program leading to a reactor in the late 1990's and a minimal program that would lead to a reactor around 2010. Each had a proposed funding profile. There was also a line called "fusion never" at which funding was insufficient to achieve the needed critical mass of effort to achieve a viable reactor. Guess what option was ultimately chosen? It's a miracle we've made as much progress as we have. The more accurate statement is not that fusion is 30 years away, is that fusion is about $30 billion away

Yes, because I remember when NASA built two different Lunar Landers, two Saturn V class vehicles, two Space Shuttle designs, two Space Stations. While some recent commercial awards do have competitive elements (like commercial cargo and commercial crew), to claim that NASA never awards contracts to a single winner is disingenuous

Talking with my oncologist friend, he mentioned the big game changer with these types of vaccines is that they can load up hundreds (and potentially thousands) of protein sequences into them. So while for the first few years they may be more bespoke, longer term they may be able to produce 10-20 vaccines that will be able to cover a broad range of cancers and for most folks, theyâ(TM)ll be able to sequence your cancer and determine that you need vaccine 7.
