I get something like that from time to time, similarly compressed to a quadrant irrespective of screen size (with a thick black border from overlapping shadows) - also through vmconnect into a hyper-v vm, as well as rdp on the host machine. In fact, had it happen on both in the same day within the last week.

Forgot to reply - agree wholly with remarks on needing people from the field, and the analogy is reasonable enough; my thinking that was Facebook has the money and manpower to manage project, but, alas, not the collective sense of altruism necessary to drive themselves towards a goal, however noble, by any motive other than profit.

As to your parent reply, no remarks from me, I think our views align pretty well there.

Submission + - SPAM: Is Microsoft Stealing People's Bookmarks?

Z00L00K writes: From Schneier on Security

I received email from two people who told me that Microsoft Edge enabled synching without warning or consent, which means that Microsoft sucked up all of their bookmarks. Of course they can turn synching off, but it’s too late. Has this happened to anyone else, or was this user error of some sort? If this is real, can some reporter write about it? (Not that “user error” is a good justification. Any system where making a simple mistake means that you’ve forever lost your privacy isn’t a good one. We see this same situation with sharing contact lists with apps on smartphones. Apps will repeatedly ask, and only need you to accidentally click “okay” once.) EDITED TO ADD: It’s actually worse than I thought. Edge urges users to store passwords, ID numbers, and even passport numbers, all of which get uploaded to Microsoft by default when synch is enabled.

Also from one comment:

Ted November 17, 2021 8:29 AM It looks like Microsoft released some documentation on “Microsoft Edge – Policies” for Enterprise on 11-9-21. It is only a 472 minute read, but there is some info on Forced Synching, for example: ForceSync Force synchronization of browser data and do not show the sync consent prompt [spam URL stripped]...

I will also note that I've found the primary user of my MBP'09's magsafe feature is undoubtedly my dog (usually while being trolled by the cat). It's just a coffee table machine (forcibly upgraded to high sierra, for a few more years of use), but still a drop hazard - and he's only managed to yank it off the table once or twice (despite dozens of disconnects).

Submission + - Developer Attempts 'Doom' Clone for the Amiga 500 - Continued 1

Mike Bouma writes: As reported earlier this year on Slashdot, KK of the demo scene group Altair is making a Doom clone for the Amiga 500 with 1 MB of Ram. The project has meanwhile seen rapid progress, this also because it has gone from a solo effort towards a team effort. For example John Tsakiris of Pixelglass Games has now replaced the ingame graphics with better looking and better optimised versions. Even a demo map has been made available for both Amiga 500s with 1 MB Ram and Atari STs with 2 MBs of Ram. Both versions are already look impressive, although the Amiga version does run a little faster. Have a look:

Dread Ep 08 — "Doom" clone for Amiga 500 — Total Graphics Replacement

Dread Ep 09 — "Doom" clone for Amiga 500 — The Demo Map Release

You can find KK/Altair and the other developers at the English Amiga Board.

Further, only time I've had someone do it to me, it was a freak accident - diabetic man who needed velcro shoes managed to catch the unraveled velcro cord tie, just barely, and (i watched security footage to see exactly what happened, morbidly curious) i jerked it about a bit over-balance on the edge of a counter, leading to my poor old ThinkPad 600x toppling awkwardly to the floor, with the shell of the screen basically exploding (screen corner was dented, but glass somehow unbroken; about a third of the screen shell popped off as a huge chunk)

To snark-ass me, sounds like they've written the next part of the script in their heads already; after cataloging complaints of how difficult it is, and how many phones destroyed... "this is why you can't be allowed to have nice things". And some chuckleheads will enjoy their $400/course meals on Apple's dime and there will be much rejoicing as the votes are tabulated on the next round of relevant legislation.

Perhaps i'm needlessly pessimistic, but their attitude in the past helps paint this as a sort of preparation of a strawman in my mind.

I've toyed around a little but didn't want to fry my parents' microwave - most plasma stuff i've done has been split grapes. Actually never done the match trick, and not going to as I live in an apartment (with cabinet-mounted unit), but I need to keep this in mind next time I spot a big old chonker at a garage sale/thrift store. I've always imagined it's something akin to eddy currents causing fluctuating paths of conductivity, essentially creating a bunch of not-so-solid solenoids, and absorbing/retransmitting energy in their immediate environment, with thermal radiation not being fast enough to relieve the accumulated heat, compounding the effect - but this is basically lay speculation.

Regarding the rest, I'd like to think my allusions to nuclear warfare were entirely fanciful. Very often I pray (though non-religious, so i guess more of a personal affirmation) that cooler heads continue to prevail.
