Comment Re:I fixed this by switching to Debian (Score 1) 118

I switched to Linux in 2002 or so. Since then I've kept a VM with XP and then Win10 for the (very) few Win softwares I still use, including a RAW conversion tool and a panorama stitcher. There are Linux alternatives, but it takes so long to retrain that I never took the jump.

And that's for any sites that use Cloudflare. Just changing the user agent to anything else (or back) and refreshing will give me the wanted page, but it's a PITA.

I wonder what kind of solution we might have in our case. We are a small group of apartments with a common parking lot, all by owners. Is there some kind of plug we could install and share *and* not pay extra on the electricity ? I'm sure I could find companies to install some kind of public plug, but then they'd take a 50% charge of the electricity I'm sure...

+1 for your "fixed spaciality" explanation. Same here.

Also while writing, physical paper allows for faster changes: think of a better word in the middle of writing a bad one, finish writing bad word (or stop), write better word, cross out bad word. The crossing out takes less than half a second, not interrupting the flow of words.

I give programming lessons. I'm appalled at how people use the keyboard/mouse, even somewhat experienced programmers. They'll mistype a word, like 'mistale' instead of 'mistake', grab the mouse, place it between 'a' and 'l', click and select the 'l', press 'Del', type 'k', grab the mouse again, click after the 'e' and keep on typing. It's infuriating when you see it 3 times per minute. A LOT of people have sub-optimal typing mannerisms like that, I don't see how they can keep 'in the flow' with such behaviors.

Projector is a recent XGimi with AndroidTV.
I've already had a long installed Linux NFS server, but I've seen no way to use that on Android, except maybe with Kodi but I couldn't figure out how to configure it.
So I installed MiniDLNA and a Plex server. I don't like how Plex reorganizes everything, Nova server is different on Android TV than on a phone and also reorganizes everything instead of showing network folders. Finally VLC does the job, although it seems to ignore srt subtitle files. So that's mostly solved.
As for casting from phone or Linux laptops, that's an entire other headache. Video apps don't show the 'cast' icon and after installing MagiCast on both I can cast the entire screen to the projector. So it's more complicated than announced but it works. And from a PC, apparently VLC can cast to the projector, but it just hangs.
And for playing Youtube videos without commercials, I still haven't found something that works simply *and* reliably.
And there are so many other details: KDEconnect which is fantastic between phone and PC only partly works on the projector, etc...

I'm pretty sure you're joking, but... why would anybody waste so much time setting that up ?
Case in point, as a longtime geek I never want(ed) anything 'connected' inside my house besides (Linux) computers; mostly for security reasons. And yet for Xmas I got a projector.
I just spent the last 2 days, while watching a sick kid, trying to set it up, and still it won't do what I want. Already setting it up with the most basic stuff takes time, typing wifi codes with just a remote control is a pain in the ass. And then setting it up to watch vids off your private network and not just the stuff they want to feed you takes forever to figure out, had to try Plex, Kodi and more before figuring out good old VLC could do it fine. Then why is there so many ads on YouTube and other channels ? And how do you get rid of them ? More hours setting up additional crap (VPN, DNS redirections, additional apps...) to try and get rid of this mind manipulation.
And then if you want to tweak little things like the pics shown on the screensaver, it's another additional nightmare. It's such a pain in the ass and I don't find much of a quality improvement compared to watching on a laptop screen.
